Book Review - How We Decide by Jonah Lehrer

By Jeffrey Caminsky Platinum Quality Author

Among the enigmas of human existence, the brain is singular in its importance. It not only defines us as a species, but is also the seat of our consciousness, allowing us, among other things, to wonder about ourselves, our world, and our own mortality.

But the brain is also a mystery in its own right. Since the days of the ancient Greeks, men have argued about its role in setting us apart from the rest of the animal kingdom. And the split between our rationality and our passion-our capacity for thought as well as feeling-has been food for philosophers since the beginning of civilization. Plato argued that it was rationality that set us apart from animals and made us human; Aristotle, his pupil, believed that the brain's role was to manage our emotions and apply them intelligently to the world around us.

In How We Decide, author Jonah Lehrer explores our current state of knowledge about our defining organ, the human brain. In an intelligent and engaging way, he shows how evolution has developed the two sides of our mind-our rational left hemisphere, and our emotional, intuitive right hemisphere-to give us a flexible and adaptable thinking tool that lets us apply quite varied modes of reasoning to the problems that we confront.

Lehrer shows how learning to trust our instincts and feelings can help us solve problems quickly and intuitively, when there is no time to reason out a problem. Yet we must also be cautious about relying too heavily upon our gut feelings and emotions, for they are easily fooled if we are facing a situation that is unfamiliar. Mastering the interplay between the two-and, most importantly, learning which to trust in what circumstances-is the mark of someone who makes consistently good decisions. There are, after all, some situations where thinking too much is counterproductive, and where lab rats do better than graduate students, simply because they lack the capacity to overthink. In humans, the ability to sense when to shift to a different mode of thinking is often what separates the wise from the foolish among us. And more often than not, a willingness to examine and learn from our own mistakes is what teaches us when, and how, to make the switch.

Using examples that range from professional football players to airline pilots, from casinos to modern politics, the author shows how our minds can solve problems seamlessly, or be tripped up by bells and whistles designed to soothe our senses and make us feel good. In our turbulent times, the ability to use our heads to recognize and sift through the perils and pitfalls we face is a daunting task, often made even harder by the confusing array of information that greets us every day. Tightly written and entertaining, How We Decide gives us reason to hope, and some useful perspective on our ability to make sense of our rapidly changing world.

He is the author of the science fiction adventure novels, The Sirens of Space and The Star Dancers, the first two volumes in the Guardians of Peace science fiction adventure series, as well as The Referee's Survival Guide, a book on soccer officiating, and The Sonnets of William Shakespeare a book on Elizabethan poetry, all published by New Alexandria Press, http://www.newalexandriapress.com

Now's the Time to Book Flights to London

By Andy Hygate

If you've been longing for that British getaway but have been scared off by a strong pound, today's your lucky day: with the pound dropping to new lows against the dollar and almost at parity with the euro, booking cheap flights to London has never been easier - or more affordable! If you've got your eye on a weekend getaway to the Big Smoke, or a month-long holiday in the English countryside, now's the time to book your dirt-cheap flight to London.

Want to know a few secrets to get an even more affordable flight to London? Here are expert traveling tips that will have you saying "hello" to England sooner than you think!

Know Which Season To Travel. If you live in Europe or America, you're more likely to take your long holidays during the summer months. However, this is also the height of tourist season in the UK, so the prices of flights will skyrocket. If you've got your heart set on visiting London and the UK through June to August, book your flight early in the year to avoid high prices. If you're not particular about when you visit London, try planning your holiday during the autumn or spring months, when the weather is pleasant and the prices are cheap. Although winters are cold and blustery in London, it's the best time to get dirt-cheap prices to the Big Smoke, so make sure your winter UK travels keeps you indoors!

The Bigger Names May Get You The Best Price. Contrary to popular belief, it's often the bigger airline names that can get you the best prices for flights to London, since all taxes and fees are included in the quoted price. Within smaller or budget airlines, taxes, fees and other services like baggage check and snack service can all incur costs, which will add up pretty quickly by the time you touch down in London town!

Avoid Major Holidays. When it comes to reasons for hiking flight prices up into the stratosphere, there's no better excuse than a major holiday. If you've got a bank holiday or a long weekend coming up, it might not be the best time to take that getaway, since flight prices will likely rise due to increasing demand.

Ask For An Upgrade. One of the best perks of scoring a cheap flight to London is the possibility of getting an upgrade to business or even first class. Ask your ticketing agent if there are any available seats in the business or first class cabins; if there are, you can request to be put on a waiting list for the chance of a luxurious upgrade. Not a bad way to fly!

Getting a flight to London doesn't have to involve a lot of research. Browse our website for tons of cheap and convenient flights to the Big Smoke; thanks to our quick and easy booking process, you'll be on your flight for a British adventure in no time!

Book Review - "Connections - Everyone Happens For a Reason"

By Nickolove Lovemore Platinum Quality Author

Connections: Everyone Happens for a Reason" is a beautifully crafted book not just from the literary perspective but in its visual presentation as well.

The symbol of jigsaw puzzle pieces is used throughout the book and so makes for an apt analogy here. Imagine taking jigsaw pieces from numerous different jigsaw puzzles and trying to make the pieces fit together. Your first reaction might be,

"Well, that wouldn't work - the pieces won't fit together."

However, this is what co-authors Dennis Berlien and Jerry Davich have achieved.

The stories of the individuals featured in this book, including those of the authors, are skillfully interwoven. The authors take you by the hand and gently guide you through a wonderful journey of self-discovery because as you read this book you can't help but reflect upon your own life and the connections you've made, missed or have yet to make.

To facilitate this process the book is designed so that there are spaces for you to record your thoughts and respond to the probing questions that are asked throughout the book. The book therefore becomes an interactive journal.

Like in the popular TV series Colombo where you know 'who dunnit' from the outset, you can guess the outcome of some of the stories. Still, that doesn't spoil your pleasure of reading the story for it's the loving detail in which these stories are told that fascinates. Several of the stories have unexpected twists which adds to the intrigue. And sometimes you are taken by surprise even if afterwards you say to yourself that you should have connected the dots. However, this is the power of this book to draw you through it without you trying to figure it out as though it were, for example, a thriller.

This is a book that you can easily read in one sitting but a book that you'll also want to read again. It's very inspirational and touching. You'd have to be as hard as nails not to find yourself moved to tears by some of the stories.

Other stories will give you goose bumps as they unfold the power of synchronicity. You'll recall instances in your own life where a seemingly random chain of events suddenly collate with dramatic consequences.

The poignant stories also make you realise that there can be two interpretations of the phrase "everyone happens for a reason". The first is that everyone who enters your life, however fleeting, does so for a reason. The second is that if you're here on this Earth then you are definitely here for a reason. Your birth was no accident. You have a purpose in life and as Oprah says,

"The work of your life is to discover your purpose and get on with the business of living it out."

You'll find your purpose and you'll be able to live your life on purpose through the relationships you make in your life.

And especially, in this the 21st century, we have unprecedented opportunities to be able to connect with each other. The Internet allows you to connect with people all over the world almost instantly. The popularity of Social Media sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace and Twitter demonstrate our desire to interact with like-minded people.

Nonetheless, despite our technologically advances there are still millions people who feel isolated and lonely. This book reminds you that in order to connect with others, in a meaningful manner, you first have to learn how to connect with yourself. You have to look inwards before looking and reaching outwards.

Ironically, one of the most delightful tales from this book is about an individual who shunned all the high-tech ways of communicating. The comparatively primitive and simple manner he chose didn't even have any guarantee of success but he was successful and in ways in which he couldn't have imagined.

Reading this book and honestly answering the questions that lie within as well as the questions that will certainly arise from within you as you read this book will undoubtedly enhance the quality of your life. This is the kind of book that is worthy of keeping a spare copy to give to a friend or a stranger.

To discover the true meaning of connecting and how to develop more meaningful relationships in your life visit http://www.ConnectionsBook.com and learn more about "Connections" and the individuals featured in this book. The Bernie Madoff Book You Should Have Read Before Investing

By Martin Sage

A Bernie Madoff book or guide would have gone a long way toward preventing the greatest fraud of all time, don't you agree? Bernie is arguably the most successful white collar criminal in history, but what if someone had written a book... a Bernie Madoff book let's say that would have clued us all in to the kind of scheming fraud he was? Would you have read it before investing with him? It's a little late now but I'm betting you would have read it if such a book existed.

I can tell you that just such a book did exist... sort of. You see long before there was a Bernie Madoff scandal, long before the current eruption of ponzi investment schemes littering the newspapers today, long before the present TARP bailout... there was the S&L crisis of the late 1980s. You see wherever there is money (particularly lots of it), there is fraud (also lots of it). It really is a stunning case of deja vu when you think about it. Here we are twenty some odd years since the 1987 stock market crash going through the identical stock market gyrations, bank implosions, and tax-payer funded bailouts.

You would think we'd have learned by now but apparently we haven't. Around that time in the mid-eighties, a young man and future author was just getting his feet in the door in the world of investment banking and in particular, bond trading. Those very same assets regarded as toxic today had very closely related cousins which were being traded in the 1980s, and many young men were eager to make as much money as possible doing whatever they had to do to make Savings & Loans bank managers buy (and sell) them. Our future author was of no particular distinction when he became a bond trader, and frankly didn't have any sort of pedigree to be in that position - and yet there he was, making a six-figure salary convincing S&L managers and other wealthy clients buy and sell investment bonds.

You should already be able to tell what the problem has been with the system, and why fraudulent schemes persist. Young men (and some women... but let's face it... it's predominantly men) are paid vast sums of money to get you and I to make as many investment transactions as possible whether it is in our best interest or not. It was true in 1987 and it is true today. Every time a transaction occurs a little crumb falls off of the investment wealth of you and I and falls into the pocket of someone else in the form of a commission.

You would think someone out among the young traders and investment professionals would have enough of a conscience to inform the public about the mechanisms of the investment world and the frauds they perpetuate. You would like to believe that same someone would write a book... a Bernie Madoff book to keep us from making the same mistakes we made in 1987. As I stated in my opening, someone did write a Bernie Madoff book... of sorts. Someone did have enough conscience to tell all (and thus ruin his bond trading career). The name of the Bernie Madoff book circa 1987 was Liar's Poker. The man of conscience was Michael Lewis. Perhaps Michael will write another tale describing this scam. Perhaps next time we'll pay attention.

The Way from Science to Soul - Book Review

By Heather Froeschl Platinum Quality Author

Using quantum physics to illuminate the spiritual journey? The author does just this in the book, “The Way from Science to Soul: Integrating Physics, the Brain, and the Spiritual Journey,” by Casey Blood, PH.D. But, why would you do such a thing? Why mix science and soul, quantum mechanics with spirituality? Dr. Casey Blood is a Professor Emeritus at Rutgers University, so if he wants to do this, I suppose he is qualified to. I'm not a scientist, so what do I know? A little something about spirituality at least.

Physics is the study of the physical universe, and one wouldn’t expect to learn about the spiritual side of life, or the nonphysical universe when reading about it. However, Dr. Blood begins our education on this matter with an in-depth coverage of physics and quantum mechanics, the brain (including the synapse), and how these all pull together so that we can either see the spiritual side, or choose not to. The point of it is that there are several versions of reality to perceive while we choose to only see one; the existence of the soul can not be disproved, nor proven by science. So how does the nonphysical soul interact with the physical world? The soul can perceive the physical brain and through this, perceive the world. But, the physical world is not the only plane to be aware of. The soul can exist on many planes, the physical, the angelic plane, which is closest to the source of all, and the “jinn” plane, which is where our souls can communicate with other souls. Dr. Blood explains that our soul’s journey is much longer than that of our earthly existence, and that we have time to spend on each plane.

Dr. Blood describes spiritual practices which help us to remember that we are a nonphysical soul that has a physical body. These practices include meditation, yoga, focus on breathing, using retreats and finding teachers to help us. These practices though, are not the end goal. Our personality and contribution to society is important too. Dr. Blood states that we need to develop certain qualities like insight, compassion, friendship and wisdom and gives guidance on how to do so.

I was a little worried when I was asked to review this book. However, Dr. Blood takes a very complex topic and relates it to the average reader in a carefully chosen tone of support. The interest in spirituality is growing in leaps and bounds so that this connection to quantum physics will surely have a target audience, but, is still something of interest to the masses. The book is not an easy read, but it is worthwhile to wrap your physical mind around it for a time. Your spiritual mind will thank you.

Reunion by Fred Uhlman - Book Review

By David Carter Platinum Quality Author

This isn't so much a novel as a novella, and a brief one at that being just 93 small pages in length. But don't let that put you off for this is a superb read.

It opens in 1930's Germany in a smart senior school where 15/16 year old boys, young men, are making friends, ostensibly for life. How were they to know that so many lives would be cut so tragically short?

After a hesitant beginning the shy Hans Schwarz becomes pals with the more confident and aristocratic Konradin. Hans comes from a Jewish background and that factor eventually invades their friendship.

This period of history has been chronicled a million times, and rightly so for there are lessons there that resonate down to the present day. All the characters are sharply drawn and memorable and for the most part, decent human beings. So where did it all go so wrong?

The book also contains a two page introduction written by the late and much missed Arthur Koestler, and that is well worth reading on its own.

Reunion is beautifully written and easy to read, and this is certainly a book for anyone who can't abide the huge tomes that so often dominate the bookstores. It isn't a new book either, but don't let that put you off because it is a very memorable one, and a story that lives long in the memory.

Jeffrey Archer wrote of Reunion: "I wish I had written this". He certainly is not alone in that, not least from your correspondent.

Reunion is published by Fontana books on ISBN: 0006151647 and is available from most internet bookstalls.

David Carter's new novel "The Fish Catcher" tells the story of a group of children evacuated from London during World War II to escape the blitz bombing. It turns into a murder mystery and has been well reviewed. You can check out the first chapter on David's website at http://www.davidcarter.eu.
The book is available in hard copy or by instant download, and can be ordered in any bookshop quoting ISBN 978 - 1847539304

World Almanac Book of Facts - Ultimate Reference For the Serious Thought Leader

By Lance Winslow Platinum Quality Author

Checking facts is essential and knowing that most of these facts are all in one place, one place you can trust is priceless. Whether you are a writer, professor or simply doing research, as a student you'll need a handy reference books of facts. This is what I have to back up what I write, and I'd recommend the same for anyone who is truly serious about getting their facts right the first time.

This is why I would advise that you get yourself an extremely easy to navigate and comprehensive current Almanac. The one I am currently using and would certainly recommend to you is:

"The World Almanac Book of Facts 2008" published by World Almanac Books, 2008.

When this Almanac says World, they mean World-Wide information, historical events, dates, times, places, people and sports data too. This book will tell you which nations have raw materials, how much and where they are located. Interested in industry, mining, agriculture, transportation, populations, ethnic and religious break downs, it's all there and more, more data than one person would ever need or care to know. It's like a mini-wiki-pedia in book form and it is so easy to navigate and flip through.

Over the years, I have built up my reference library and I've owned various almanacs by different companies, and this is the one I prefer. If you go and take a look at one in the book store, I am sure you will see why. Additionally, the information is fully up to date at the time of the printing, such as world leaders, boundary changes and current events. I'd recommend this almanac; The World Almanac to anybody.

An Almanac for Dads - Get Out? A Book Review for Any Father

By Lance Winslow Platinum Quality Author

Well, no one's parents are perfect, but what if you could be the perfect dad? Listen fathers, I think it is now possible. No, it's probably too late for dead beat dads, but if you have done a pretty good job so far, then perfection is within range. Let me explain, you see, you need the ultimate book designed just for dads:

"The Father's Almanac" by S. Adams Sullivan - 1947.

Sometimes funny, but always informative, this work is perfect for a father, who has a child, kid or teen and suddenly realized that his offspring came with no information manual. Well, consider this the book for you. The subtitle; "An Indispensable Book of Practical Advice and Ideas for Men Who Enjoy the Fun and Challenge of Raising Young Children." After reading through this book, I have to agree, it is all that and more. There is even a chapter for fathers who will soon be fathers and are quite worried and wondering if they can handle it or not. Most likely they won't get everything right with or without this book, but it's a heck of a great start.

Chapters include such subjects as dealing with babies, proper discipline, how to play with kids, juggling family with job, providing for a family and the real needs, as well as chapters on special events, working with kids, teaching them, and keeping good records. The end of the book is rich with much needed information, further reading and resources. Free Reverse Phone Book Lookup - How to Run a Reverse Phone Book Lookup For Free

By Roger Phillips Platinum Quality Author

Anyone can do a free reverse phone book lookup these days. With the internet search technology becoming so advanced, there is really no need to dig physical telephone directories to lookup a number anymore.

Just a few years ago, anyone who wants to reverse search a phone number will have to browse through tons of telephone books to do so. Depending on the way they are organized, some categorize the details according to the alphabetical order of names. Others categorize them according to the running sequence of phone numbers which is easier to trace to its owners.

Today, such records can be found online allowing folks like us to run a free reverse phone book lookup. It is so convenient. Just fill in the full number and click on the search button and we will see results within seconds.

However, not all telephone numbers can be found by using a reverse telephone search that is free to run. This is because free telephone sites do not list all numbers. They only have landlines that are published in the public domain. In other words, if it is a residential number that is listed in the public government agencies, then there is a chance that you can find it for free.

But if they are not, which can mean that the number is from a cellular phone, fax machine, pager or even an unpublished business landline, then you will hit the walls trying.

So, take note, a free reverse phone book lookup is only applicable on a published landline number.

Run your instant reverse phone number lookup at the most popular lookup service now to trace that phone number.

Sundays at Tiffany's by James Patterson - Book Review

By Nancy Eaton

Jane has an imaginary friend named Michael. Why? She is very lonely because her mother, Vivienne, is a successful Broadway producer who does not have much time for Jane. Michael is much older then Jane but this does not bother her because he is always there when she needs someone to talk with. The only day Jane's mother finds time to spend with her is on Sundays. They normally stop at the St. Regis Hotel where Jane eats an ice cream sundae and chats with Michael while her mother is busy discussing other things with a friend. Afterward, Jane and Vivienne go to Tiffany's to look at jewelry.

There is a huge problem in store for Jane. What she does not realize is that when she turns nine, Michael must leave her and go on to other lonely children. The worst part is that she is not supposed to remember him at all.

Well, that is what is supposed to happen but Jane does remember Michael. One day, they meet again. Michael is no longer imaginary. Who is Michael? Is he an angel?

Michael and Jane begin to spend time together and realize they are really meant to be. Michael then starts to realize why he has been brought back into Jane's life. What is the reason? Do Michael and Jane end up with each other?

Many people might consider this story far-fetched. I say - so what? This is a magical story that will keep the reader turning the pages. The plot is quite different compared to many of James Patterson's other books but it is a very entertaining read. By the way, haven't we all, as children, had an imaginary friend here or there? This is a love story that all romantics will thoroughly enjoy.

Water Lily by Susanna Jones - Book Review

By David Carter Platinum Quality Author

This book was very easy to get into and very easy to read. It concerns a teacher and pupil who embark on a passionate affair. Nothing unusual in that you might say in the twenty-first century, except the teacher is a young woman in her twenties and the man, or boy, is a kid of sixteen. Nothing really unusual in that even, not in this day and age, except that this is Japan, and Runa is now in severe trouble.

Someone has seen them leaving a hotel, taken their photograph, threatens to expose them, so it is rumoured. The other teachers are aware that someone has been having an affair, but they don't yet know who. The witch hunt is on.

Runa panics and steals her sister's passport and flees the town, flees the country. She jumps on a ferry for Shanghai, and though she can't stop thinking of Jun, the kid, she's committed to running.

Meanwhile on the other side of town, Ralph, a middle aged English shopkeeper has been turned down flat by the comely young ladies at the Japanese Wives Bureau. He is too old, and too funny looking, big nose you see, for their liking. No thanks! No way. Not a chance.

He's already tried a Thai wife before and his options are rapidly running out. His Thai beauty, Apple, (why are they always called Apple?) was charming and sweet in Thailand but once back in Carlisle in the far north of England, overnight she turned into a sourpuss, and worse still, stays out all night, engaged on affairs. No, Ralph does not want another Thai bride. Too much trouble for him.

He's heard that China is a good bet. The hip place for the modern man to find a pretty young wife. You can buy anything in China nowadays, so they say.

He jumps the ferry for Shanghai and of course it is not long before he meets, and falls under the spell of the beautiful, yet streetwise, young Runa.

So begins the Water Lily, a novel of mystery, and an excellent one at that, from Susanna Jones.

Ralph and Runa believe all their troubles are over, when in fact they are only just beginning, and things rapidly get worse. Much worse.

As I said earlier, this book is incredibly easy to get into. I was hooked by page two. The pace is relentless. It simply will not let you set it down. Seek it out. You won't be disappointed. And for any budding writers out there, you will find lots to inspire and guide you here. Highly recommended.

A Practical Read on Book Dropshippers

By Nikki Davila Platinum Quality Author

Book dropshippers can be really helpful for those who are trying to sell books online. You certainly would not want to use your garage or backyard to stock up the books, and it only makes sense to find others who can stock up for you and arrange shipping and handling.

To find the book dropshippers you can work with, you can first make use of an online directory. Many directories can show you publishers who will drop ship their publications such as manuals, books and magazines, straight to your customers. You will not have to stock any publications at all, and you do not even have to pay for your merchandise before it is being purchased. You will also have zero worries about packaging and shipping and handling, damages, space requirements and additional fees. Good book dropshippers will be able to simply receive your orders and do almost all the work for you thereafter. They will also be able to provide you with scores of new books in a variety of subjects. That way, you can stay focused on promoting the books and concluding sales.

Now, don't go for just any book dropshipper provided by the directories. Do your own research first and make sure you are getting exactly what you are paying for. It is also wise to invest a few dollars on a dropshipper list, as this will narrow down your search to a few reliable drop shippers. In case you would like to find your own way, you can visit the local bookstores or research over the Internet for books or ebooks that are selling well. Try to find out the publishers, call them straight up and see if they drop ship their items.

You may encounter some people who simply tell you that they don't do drop shipping, and you should not give up just yet. For smaller publishers, you can even explain the drop shipping idea to them. Once they realize that they can also benefit from becoming book dropshippers, they may go ahead and do business with you.

Another important step, before you enter into a formal relationship with any book dropshipper, is a research of the market. You should develop a very good understanding of what the best sellers are, which topics sell well, and approximately how much demand you will receive in a month. You should then put your market knowledge into your selection of book dropshippers. It is always wise to reserve some alternatives to what you intend to sell, just in case the best ones quickly run our of stock.

Just as the case with choosing a partner in any line of industry, it is important that you exercise enough diligence into choosing your book dropshippers. Remember, once you find a reliable one, you will no longer have to lift a finger!

Pricing Your First New E-Book

By Phillip Rodgers

Congratulations on writing first new e-book and now you're ready to sell it. But do you know how to price your e-book. Determining what the right price for your first e-book is very important. You've put a lot of work into writing this e-book and you don't want to charge too little. If you charge too little it will take a long time to make a profit. On the other hand, you don't want to charge too much either. You don't want to have to start lowering your prices after selling a few e-books. Doing that certainly won't please a prior customer. There are a few things you should consider in order to find the right price for your first new e-book.

Never Under Price Your EBook

One of the first rules you must remember is to never under price your first new e-book. Go online and check out your competition first. There is no reason you can't start out selling your first new e-book for the same price they are. Don't forget you are selling your first new e-book in order to make a profit. Most people will judge the value of your e-book by the price it is selling for. Just because it is your first e-book is no reason to feel intimidated.

How Valuable Is It?

If your first new e-book is offering new information then it is of great value. Helping the public find new answers to old problems is a real plus. People are tired of paying for e-books that just rehash over and over the same old things. Having an e-book which is offering new references and techniques is of great value to everybody. If this is the case then keep your first new e-book prices on the high end. If not then keep your first e-book prices competitive.

You're Return On Investments.

Chances are since this is your first new e-book you will be spending money on advertising. You must include your advertising costs into how you determine the right price for your first new e-book. For example, let's say you have decided to use Adwords as a means for promoting your new e-book. Because your budget is small you're only able to spend five dollars a day on advertising. And you have decided to sell your first new e-book for the amount of $29.95. This means you must at the least sell one of your new e-books every six days just to break even. Breaking even is not making a profit. That's why it is very important when you first start a campaign selling your first new e-book that you pay close attention to how your advertising costs are eating into your potential profits.

Every author of a new e-book hopes to have a successful experience in promoting and selling it. The key thing to being successful is not to give up. You know it's a good e-book full of new resources and valuable information. Because you checked out your competition, you know, the pricing is correct. So the only thing you have to do now is fine tune your advertising costs versus your profits and your dream will come true. Look on the bright side. Having succeeded on your first new e-book the second one will be a piece of cake.

Spring Break - It's Never Too Early to Book

By Brad Gallier

You are probably wearing a heavy coat every time you leave the house. And the calendar still makes spring seem off in the distance. But, now is the time to think of when and where you will go for Spring Break vacation.

The beaches of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, Alabama, are the perfect answer for rest and relaxation and fun all in one. And making a decision sooner than later could save you several hundred dollars by booking a condo reservation during the slower times of the year. The month of February fits that bill to a tee. Calling now is exactly the right time to get the most out of your vacation budget.

Reservation specials offering 7 for the price of 4 and 5 nights for the price of 3 are some of the possibilities. You know you do not want to miss out on the chance to work on your tan and walk on the beach at sunset. So why not get the Spring Break vacation you want and save money all at the same time. But beware; you have to get the reservations done by Feb. 27 to get the most savings.

So pull the family together and talk out what you need in beach condo or house. Make the call to lock in you favorite property. Then it is time to scour the house and make sure you know where the suitcases and swimsuits are so you can be ready at a moments notice. If you really want to be a boy scout about preparedness, go ahead and locate the suntan oil and dive mask, too.

There are any number of things to do in the Gulf Shores/Orange Beach area, which go beyond just hanging at the beach. There are 10 golf courses within an hour or less. The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo is fun for the whole family. The Track Amusement Park offers something for everyone from go-carts to a free-fall sky coaster. Rest and relaxation is also an event that should always receive a top priority during any Spring Break.

Remember spring is on the way. And, just knowing you have your upcoming Spring Break vacation plans secured and ready to go, can make spring seem even closer.

How to Get Your Self Published Book Noticed

By Preston Bennett

If you have a self published book that you want to get others to notice, you can do so by getting book reviews of the work. Book reviews will tell others if the writing is worth reading. They should be written by professional book reviewers who are used to writing notices that give readers a glimpse of the book without giving away the ending or the plot turns.

Anyone who self publishes a book has already done the hard work that it takes to get the work into the limelight - they have written the book. Writing a book is difficult work and authors should be commended for completing such a daunting task. However, the hard work may be behind the author, but there is still more work to go. After the works have been self published, the author must then market the property so that the public will buy it. One way to do this is to get reviews written about the novel by a review company. Using a review service is one way to spread the word about your writing.

Another way that a book author can use for self published marketing is to send the work to various bookstores so that they will sell it. Local bookstores will most likely want to feature a local author at a book signing. New authors should be happy to sign their books at these signings. Most book stores are eager to get customers into the store and will be glad to feature a local author. Publicity for the signing can be given in local newspapers.

All book marketing is viral. It can be difficult for a new author to break in, but once someone reads the book and likes it, they will most likely want to recommend it to others. This is how books are marketed. And reviews are an advertising vehicle that few authors can do without. Reviews are a way of someone reading the work and then recommending it to a whole group of people.

Getting the book reviewed from a review company can be a wise investment for a new author as it can help the writing get noticed by readers. A book review service can let the public in the on the secret of this new literary find and the author may find themselves being discovered by the public. Many famous authors self published their first novel. The best way to go about self published book marketing is to get self published book reviews from a review company.

The Ultimate Cigar Book Review

By Darin Kleb

Are you thinking of joining the ever growing group of individuals who love to smoke fine cigars? Or, are you already an avid cigar smoker looking to learn more about the hobby you've grown to love? Whether you're new to the wonderful world of cigar smoking, or a seasoned professional, The Ultimate Cigar Book by Richard Hacker offers you a wealth of knowledge on cigars that any cigar smoker can appreciate.

In The Ultimate Cigar Book, Hacker researches and reviews all sorts of non-Havana cigars, by describing production outside of Cuba. If you're an American looking for a practical book on cigars, the non-Cuban approach Hacker uses is sure to prove useful. As all good American cigar smokers know, it's hard to come across a cuban cigar that isn't illegal to have. Real hard. In fact, it's impossible with U.S. laws.

Not only will you find numerous reviews of fine cigars from all over the world inside The Ultimate Cigar Book, but also Hacker doesn't shy away from including reviews of some of the cheaper, factory made cigars, such as the Phillies.

Along with reviews, Hacker will turn you into a cigar expert, teaching you how cigars are made and what to look for when choosing the right cigar for you or a friend. Although Hacker does make some ill-advised generalization about the makeup of a cigar, like stating that a lighter shade wrapper will indicate a milder tasting cigar, for the most part Hacker is dead on.

Whether you're a seasoned pro or just a beginner, I suggest you check out The Ultimate Cigar Book. Before you start dumping money into this expensive hobby, you should definitely consult this book.

As one of the few cigar books out there, I give this book a 9/10 rating.

Darin is an avid smoker of fine cigars. To learn more about The Ultimate Cigar Book and read some user reviews, click here.

Why Book Reviews Are So Important to Book Marketing

By Preston Bennett

Book reviews are not only important to book marketing, but they are crucial, especially when it comes to self published book marketing. Most writers should do whatever they can do to get favorable self published book reviews in order to promote their writing.

Most book reviewers write for a living. They work freelance at this type of job, read books and write about them professionally. They know how to write about a book without giving away an ending or too much about the plot. Good book reviews should leave the reader wanting to read more, they should give a reader a glimpse into the writing that can help the reader make a decision as to whether or not they want to buy the tome.

If a writer has a self published book, it can be difficult to get a writer to write a review. Not so if the writer sends the work to a book review service. A book review company can allow for the writer to be heard in that someone will read the work and write a professional review about it. Some services will allow for more than one review to be written about the work. And these are important as many people base their decision on whether or not to buy the book on the reviews. If a novel comes highly recommended by reviewers, it is much more likely to sell than one that no one has ever heard about.

It is in the best interest of any writer to see to it that their book is reviewed by professional book reviewers and is given a proper notice as this can be vital to the success of a book. Using a book review service is a good idea, especially in the case of a self published author as they will not have a good chance of getting a professional writer to look at their work without using this type of service. Book reviews are the way that the public gets to know if the novel or writing is something that will interest them. They should not be a sales pitch for the writing, but should just discuss the plot of the book, the writing style used by the writer and the strengths of the book for the reader. It will then be up to the reader to decide on whether or not to read this novel, based upon what is said in book reviews.

Abducted - The Awakening by Lee Cambule - Book Review

By David Carter Platinum Quality Author

Gareth Oakley is a primary school teacher with problems. He is fighting the demon drink and no doubt the mood swings that come with it. He is still pining over his lost true love, now departed. He goes to bed alone in the small house they once shared, a house full of memories of happier times.

When he awakes he has a massive hangover, but that can't be right for he hasn't fallen off the wagon. He hasn't touched a drop. How strange. He opens his eyes and focuses on the ceiling. It's not his ceiling, it's not his house. So where is he? And more to the point, how did he get there? He soon finds that he is not alone, there are many others there too, and the inevitable rivalries rapidly fall into place.

So begins "abducted The Awakening" the first in a promised series of mystery novels from the young Welsh based writer, Lee Cambule.

The book quickly hooked me and I wanted to know more. It is well written throughout and has been scrupulously proof-read, something that publishers large and small could do with spending a little more time and money on. Not here though, for I found nary a spelling mistake or typo anywhere in the work. There isn't a single swear word either, and that made a pleasant change and certainly did not effect the immediacy or power of the book.

There are lots of twists and turns and hooks aplenty to keep the reader interested and guessing. The chapters are nicely spaced and keep the reader wanting to turn the page. Included are a couple of nods to J R R Tolkien and I also found it in places reminiscent of Dan Brown's work.

This book will appeal not only to Sci Fi fans, but also to anyone who enjoys a good mystery or thriller and is suitable for teenagers and upward. It leaves many questions unanswered that no doubt will be addressed in the next of the series "abducted The Betrayal".

This is a very promising debut novel and I certainly enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good mystery. Mister Cambule can certainly write, but more importantly, he has something to say.

Investment Biker Book Review

By Thomas Van Platinum Quality Author

When I first picked up this book I said to myself, as many of you probably did, "Why is there a picture of a guy sitting on a motorcycle on the front cover of this book in the finance section of the bookstore?" I picked it up and read the title "Investment Biker Around the World with Jim Rogers" and I remember thinking, "Who is Jim Rogers?"

It just so happened to turn out that Jim Rogers was the co-founder of the Quantum Fund, something I had heard of once before. I was in the mood to read anything finance related at the time and I'm glad I did.

This book is not just your typical investment strategy book as I had presumed it would be. Jim Rogers travels the entire world by motorcycle, each chapter is a new place he is heading toward, and every chapter gives the reader a lot of insight as to what type of developing nations he considered good investments at the time for Jim Rogers. Yes, he actually invests money into developing nations while riding around the world on his motorcycle. Not only will you get to learn from one of the greatest investors of all-time but you will also get a history lesson of the world and hear the tale of his difficulties traveling the world on a motorcycle.

You will get to vicariously experience the difficulties in traveling through nations in civil war, meet the border agents he had to practically bribe to get through, and travel with him across some of the most un-drivable terrain with few to none gas stations and people.

I recommend this book to anyone seeking a fun packed adventure or an investor seeking to invest in a developing nation.

Five Reasons to Independently Publish Your Next Book

By Tom Cannon

For generations, the only publishing option available to would-be authors, was the traditional method of publishing, where you submitted your manuscript to one of the big publishers and hoped for the best. Modern technology has changed that paradigm. Now, anyone with a computer and an internet connection can successfully publish a book, in a plethora of formats. And most surprisingly of all, especially for those who grew up linking publishing success with the big publishing houses, is the fact that bestsellers don't have to originate in New York or London anymore.

Interesting facts about the ever-changing world of publishing:

• Independently published authors are selling millions of volumes each year - proving that creative thought can originate outside the walls of the BIG publishing houses.
• Books by independently published authors have earned their own recognition award: Independent Publisher Book Award.
• The success of electronically published books (ebooks), with millions in annual sales, have proven it is no longer necessary to print your book traditionally.

During the rise of independent publishers, the traditional publishing houses did everything they could to convince the world that their select few authors were the only people capable of telling (writing) a good story, or creating quality books. How arrogant! Certainly, we honor them for giving us some great reads through the centuries, but thanks to independent publishers, we are beginning to realize how limited the offerings were with the BIG houses.

Independent publishers have brought a breath of fresh air to the publishing world. Thanks to independent and niche publishers, the book world, which had been declining for years, is now rising like a phoenix from the ashes. A brief examination of sales data from the independent publishers, reveals what the problem was: the BIG houses were suffocating readers with their restrictive book categories and cookie-cutter ideas. (Visit my website to read my blog: How to Write a Bestseller - An Unexpected Plan That Might Surprise You)

Independent publishing has helped explode the book market. Books that were formerly rejected by the BIG houses, for the simple reason that their topic didn't fit neatly into the existing categories, or traditional molds are selling millions of copies annually. And guess who wins? Every reader who loves great books, and every author who has a great story to tell, that's who! Isn't it good to breath again?

The top five reasons you should independently publish your own book:

1. Creating quality books independently has never been easier. Thanks to technological advances in computers, and the expansion of the internet, almost anyone can publish professional-quality books on their own. You no longer need to pay someone huge money to help you publish your book. Do some research, and you'll find many ways to publish your book inexpensively. First-time publishers need to check out Lulu.com. It's a great place to start. They provide easy-to-use templates, and offer simple instructions to guide you through the process. Once you learn how the process works, you can find less-expensive options available, but the learning curve increases with most of them. That's why I recommend starting with Lulu, especially if you are printing only a few books to start.

2. Why waste your time and energy trying to convince some stuffed shirt in New York that you have a great story to tell, only to be rejected again and again? By publishing independently, you can devote your time and energy marketing your book directly to readers, instead of trying to catch the attention of an editor. For most authors, the experience will be much more rewarding in every way. (Visit my website to read upcoming article, Ten Easy Steps to Publish Your Book Independently)

3. You'll make more money publishing your book independently. Yes, you read that right. Most authors, especially first-time authors, never make much money with their book. In fact, many authors never make more than the author's advance. Compounding that problem, is the short shelf life of a traditionally published book. Considering your book will only have a few months to start earning well, or be pulled off the shelf, you can see how the possibility of future earnings you're your traditionally published book becomes almost non-existent. Such is not the case with independently published authors. I know several independently published authors who are still making sizeable incomes from their books, decades later. Note: consider joining the thousands of authors who sell millions of copies ever year, electronically. Ebook sales are skyrocketing. If you enjoy writing short stories, or novella-style books, this may be the niche for you.

4. You retain all intellectual copyrights to your manuscripts - not the BIG publishing houses. (A word to the wise: never sign away your copyrights to any printer, agent or independent publisher. Read the fine print, or have a lawyer look over the contract). Think about it: you created the work, so why sign away your rights to a publisher or agent? If you do, you'll be sorry for that decision later, because your copyright means money to you. Sign it away, and you'll get nothing for your creative efforts. Retain your copyrights, however, and the potential for creating personal wealth from your work, will forever reside in your hands.

5. You are only an internet connection away from potentially selling thousands, or even millions of books. Skeptical? You shouldn't be. Every day, more and more independent publishers are proving old-school thinkers wrong. So tell me again - what made you think the next bestseller couldn't possibly be you? Exactly.

Independent publishing is the new frontier of the book industry. Nobody knows what the future may hold, but for authors, succeeding in that world has never been easier. Why wait another minute to publish the book of your dreams, when, with a well-written manuscript, and a high-speed internet connection, you can be on your way to publishing success.

Book Review - Not All Hope is Lost For Australia's Modern Labor Party

By Tristan Ewins

As Jenny Hocking and Colleen Lewis argue in Whitlam and Modern Labor - It's Time Again a landmark title from Circa publishing, to dismiss Whitlamism as mere nostalgia fails to recognize that it is not a yearning for the past but a concern for the present which causes progressive thinkers to look to the "brief outbreak of social democracy" from 1972 to 1975 in search of inspiration. Comprising twenty-one chapters from a host of progressive public figures and thinkers, this book provides in-depth analyses of the Whitlam government and its relevance for contemporary political debate, examining the policies of the ALP past and present, and ultimately advocating an end to the narrow, uninspired pragmatism that has gripped that party for far too long.

Provision of legal aid, equal opportunity and equal pay for women; introduction of universal public health care via Medibank; removal of censorship; establishment of the Racial Discrimination Act and ambitious urban and regional development programs as well as the release of conscientious objectors; free tertiary education; radical expansion of public education funding and participation; the Disadvantaged Schools Program, an official commitment to full employment, women's health programs and shelters, school dental services: the list of Whitlam achievements is truly staggering when compared with the timidity of today's Labor Party.

And yet, as Nathan Hollier notes, "there is a special desire to control interpretations of the period" - a tendency among some to be dismissive of the Whitlam years. By this reckoning the "hegemonic neo-liberal interpretation" is effectively enforced through the mass media, resulting in a managed exclusion of policy alternatives from public dialogue. Tim Rowse observes that leading opinion-makers such as Paul Kelly equate modernity with hard-liberal political economy, lambasting all opponents of the current neo-liberal orthodoxy as "sentimental traditionalists". Andrew Scott reflects how during the Hawke years in the Cabinet room the worst insult was to be referred to as an "unreconstructed Whitlamite".

Caricatures that equate "Whitlamism" (and thus social democracy) with economic irresponsibility and incompetence, however, pointedly ignore the context in which this government operated: a slowing of the world economy with the end of the long boom compounded by the first "oil shock", and unrelenting opposition to a comprehensive prices and incomes policy. As opposed to those like Kelly who played such an important role in legitimizing Hawke's and Keating's conversion to "neo-liberalism with a human face", contributors to this title insist that an alternative modernity remains possible - one not characterized by an almost total closure of the political field. The construction of an artificial binary opposition between "modernisation" and "tradition" serves only to obscure the real political and moral choices facing policy makers today.

Whitlam himself, who has contributed a frank evaluation of his government's achievements as part of this expansive collection, is scathing of the situation whereby "free universities [were] abandoned by a Labor government". Scott, meanwhile, is particularly despairing of the surrender of the Whitlam legacy by subsequent Labor governments and oppositions, noting the insatiable pursuit of privatization - even against existing ALP platforms. He notes a propensity for modern Labor to "opt out" of the tax debate with the relinquishment of any real commitment to a progressive, fair and equitable taxation system. With an ALP that is "scared either to tax or spend", Labor might well be able to tinker around the edges in health and education, but there is little hope of a qualitative alternative - of extending or consolidating the welfare state and the social wage in any significant way. Gwen Gray reflects the feeling of many progressive Australian thinkers and activists, confessing her fear that, in light of the ALP's support for the Coalition's tax-funded private health insurance rebate, it is not possible to be confident that Medicare will survive.

For Carmen Lawrence, the condition of modern Labor is heart-breaking. As the outspoken Labor MP relates, "[Technocratic] and incremental social change is not enough to make [one] get out of bed in the morning - I'm certainly finding it harder and harder." Notably, Lawrence traces the relatively radical tenor of the Whitlam years to "the explosion of the mass movement against the Vietnam War and the upsurge of student radicalism in the late 1960s". Lawrence's sentiments are reinforced by Hollier's conclusion that the real downfall of Labor has been, "an intellectual and organizational failure to ... effectively suffuse its principles throughout society". This, in turn, raises the question of whether the popular support base for a genuine social democratic agenda can be mobilized through force of collective will or - more pessimistically - whether it was only the radicalising experience of Vietnam which provided the opportunity for Labor under Whitlam. The role of the radical Cairns in providing the relativities within Labor that allowed Whitlam's agenda to emerge as "mainstream" also should not be underestimated.

Perhaps the last say is best given to Whitlam himself, who once declared: "We must not all fall into the defeatism that accepts that the Australian electorate is so naturally conservative that it will never accept real reform or genuine change."

As the ALP National Conference approaches, all concerned factions and interests would do well to keep these words in mind. What is more, Latham, who views himself as a Whitlam protégé, would be well advised to consider how he might extend as well as preserve the legacy of his mentor. The Whitlamite legacy of the social wage can only be preserved and improved by maintaining and even expanding government revenue as a proportion of GDP while simultaneously reforming the structure of the tax mix, in the interests of equality and distributive justice. Left interests whose support was crucial in elevating Latham to the leadership need to press this point home as firmly as possible, ensuring a clear and unequivocal commitment to these objectives in the Party platform.

Although reflecting a deep dissatisfaction with modern Labor, this title is underscored by a resilient optimism - an optimism for which the cause of democratic socialism is not yet irretrievably lost; and for which courageous leadership from within Labor may lead to the day when we can declare, once again, "It's Time".

Tristan Ewins is an established freelance writer, qualified teacher and social commentator based in Melbourne, Australia. He is also a long-time member of the Socialist Left of the Australian Labor Party (ALP).

Book Marketing - The Benefits of Providing Interviewers With Your Own Interview Questions

By Nickolove Lovemore Platinum Quality Author

Giving interviews is a great book marketing strategy. Interviews offer you the opportunity to reach potential readers and buyers of your book on a local, national and international basis often without you having to leave the comfort of your home or office.

However, just as a guest of a show or program can be disappointing in their responses, an interviewer can also miss the mark when it comes to asking great questions. Therefore it is often advantageous to offer your interviewer a list of suggested questions.

Interviews can be for TV or radio. The latter can be Internet-based station or traditional. An interview can also take the form of a teleseminar and so there are numerous opportunities for you to take advantage of as a published author and lots of potential pitfalls as well.

So here are 7 benefits of providing interviewers with your own interview questions:

1. Journalists are often very busy and have to work to tight deadlines. Submitting your own questions makes it easier for the journalist to prepare for the interview and even increases the chances that you will actually get the interview you desire.

2. If you're doing a heavy schedule of interviews then knowing what questions you're going to be asked in advance can do much to ease the stress of a hectic interview timetable.

3. Having a set of standard questions will help you to better monitor and evaluate your performance and the effectiveness of your performance under different conditions. It can also help you to identify the elements of your interview that work well and the elements that don't so that you can make changes to you're your questions and or your responses.

4. In many cases your interviewer will not have had the chance to read your book cover to cover and so preparing your own questions will help to ensure that you are able to convey the salient points of your book.

5. If your book is of a technical nature then it can help your interviewer immensely if you structure the questions for them. In addition to knowing what to ask, a list of questions can help to focus your interviewer's attention as to what they should concentrate on in preparation for the interview.

6. Providing your interviewer with a set of questions will also help in the marketing of your interview as your interviewer will be able to readily highlight the benefits of listening to the interview.

7. Knowing the questions you're going to be asked gives you greater control over the interview. It almost guarantees that you'll be given questions that you have prepared answers for so this strategy can help you to appear more confident, more relaxed and yet still energised. The requirements for a radio interview can differ greatly to that for a television interview. How you answer questions will also depend upon the format of the program that you are part of. However, whatever the interview medium, the better prepared you are, the better the impression you'll make and the more books you're likely to sell.

A great interview will also vastly increase the odds of you of being invited back for other interviews and this calibre of publicity as part of your book marketing campaign can truly be priceless.

Book Review - US Citizens Wake Up & Be Afraid

By Ronald Standerfer

Ben McGowan is an angry man, and his book, U.S. Citizens Wake Up & Be Afraid, delivers that message with sledge hammer-like efficiency starting with the second paragraph of the introduction which states: "I am The Guy Next Door, just one of the silent majority that has sat back too long and allowed our current and past leaders in Washington to lead our nation down a road of disgrace." He goes on to define these leaders as puppet-on-a-string politicians under control of the Democratic and Republican parties, as well as various sects within each party. That's just for starters. "My goal," he says, "is to awaken U.S. citizens to the poor performance of our misguided leaders, who are both elected and appointed to the top positions in the U.S. government."

When it comes to blame for the current state of affairs in our society, McGowan plays no favorites, particularly within the federal government. In an analytical fashion, he analyzes the performance of the Executive, Legislative and Judicial branches, describing how they function, who the main players are, and the mistakes they have made due to mismanagement, greed, or in many cases, heavy handed applications of enlightened self interest. As a retired military officer and Vietnam War veteran, I was particularly interested in his analysis of the Defense Department and the performance of Secretaries of Defense McNamara and Rumsfeld during their respective tenures; and I have to admit I found little to disagree with in his analysis. I should mention that I had forgotten what Ho Chi Minh said about war with the U.S. namely: "It would be like a clash between a tiger and an elephant in open battle. The elephant would crush the tiger. Yet if the tiger every once in a while crept out of the jungle to tear chunks out of the elephant's hide, the elephant would slowly bleed to death." That's pretty much the way it was as I remember it.

U.S. Citizens Wake Up & Be Afraid is not likely to be a topic of discussion among prominent think tanks in Washington anytime soon. McGowan himself admits he has no credentials in the political science arena, his writing is sometimes rambling , always emotional, and definitely in need of proof reading. But does all that matter if his message gets through? I think not. In my mind, McGowan writes like a man who has an urgent message to deliver, with no time for niceties. Think Paul Revere with a word processor instead of a horse. And for what it is worth, I ended up agreeing with most everything he said.

I finished U.S. Citizens Wake Up & Be Afraid on the Fourth of July, a time for reflection for all patriotic Americans. When I read the last page I felt like rushing to the window and, like the character in the movie "Network", shouting, "I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore." Unfortunately, I was in Europe at the time and this act of patriotic defiance would have gained me nothing but a ride to the local police station for disturbing the peace.

U.S. Citizens Wake Up & Be Afraid represents the First Amendment at its finest, written by a man who sincerely loves his country and is trying his best to sound an alarm. I recommend you read the book and see if it makes you mad as hell!

"Getting From College to Career" - Book Review

By Dan Keller

I just finished reading "Getting from College to Career" from Lindsey Pollak. As a career consultant, author and owner of a job board that focuses on jobs for high school and college students, I have read almost every book in this niche. In my opinion this book ranks among the best in the after college niche. The author stresses three themes throughout the book, she encourage entry level job seekers to be smarter, faster, and better.

What I like most about the book is that the author really stresses the importance of attitude. I have seen this time and time again in my experiences with young job seekers. If you have a great attitude you are destined to achieve and if you are miserable and have a negative attitude it will be very difficult to land a job. I also like how the author emphasizes the networking portion of the job finding phase. I like when she says that networking is not about who you know, it is about who knows you. Her advice to students to set up a linked in account and make sure that their MySpace and Facebook pages are sanitized for employers is great relevant advice to students.

My major criticism is that some of the information is rather basic and seems like she added some fluff at times to fill some pages.

In closing, I would recommend this book to all college students that are close to graduating. The book is up to date and provides a lot of relevant tips and suggestions that should help you land your first job out of college.

Love You Forever - Book Review

By Terri O'Neale Platinum Quality Author

When I review books they are usually about pregnancy, parenting or breastfeeding. But this time, I thought I would share my favourite children's book with you: Love You Forever by Robert Munsch, illustrations by Sheila McGraw. Even after almost twenty years, I still can't make it to the final page without my voice cracking and my eyes becoming misty.

The book is the story of a son and his mother. It begins when he is a baby and she rocks him, singing...I'll love you forever, I'll like you for always, As long as I'm living my baby you'll be. It follows this same theme over the years as the little boy grows. It presents the most realistic picture of parenthood I have ever seen: a toddler who pulls all the books off the shelf and all the food out of the fridge and a teen with strange friends, strange music and strange clothes. But through it all it shows the unconditional...and my children claim psychotic...love of this mother for her son.

I first found this book when we adopted our 19 year old son. His foster mother gave us his book. With him and my 18 month old daughter in my lap and my 3 year old son on the couch, I would read it with huge tears trailing down my face. Since that time, I have bought a new copy for each and every one of my children. Once they have loved it up (meaning coloured in it, spilled milk on it, and generally destroyed it), it will go in a box of their memories. As a doula, I continue this tradition by gifting a copy to each of 'my' babies on the final visit.

So if you are looking for the perfect present for Christmas, a child's birthday or a baby gift, then I might suggest a copy of this book. Or just pick up one for your child...or you. Let me know if you make it to the end without your voice cracking...

Terri is the mother of six ranging in age from 2 to 22 years old. Her parenting motto is: I don't raise children. I raise independent, functioning adult members of society. Whether she was a stay-at-home or a full-time fundraiser, her role of mother is always central to everything she does.

Twilight Book Series

By Laura Fagan

Thank you, Stephenie Meyer.

The Twilight book series instantly became one of my favorites and will stay with me for a long time. I have read the entire series, (within a week) and was very impressed by the authors original take on vampire and werewolf lore. The integration of these two fictional species, without all the original story lines and restrictions, was very refreshing, and I recommend these books to existing fans of the genre and also to those who have not been interested before. I think you may find something new, not only in the story itself, but also in the quality of visualization that the author gives us. I feel as though I could have witnessed the events for myself and could feel everything that each of the characters went through as the story developed.

The story has been taken to the next level of exposure with the production of the movie Twilight, starring Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. I felt that all of the actors in the movie did an excellent job of portraying each character trait and allowing us to fully visualize the story for the first time. Thankfully the film stays remarkably true to the original story line, (which, as we know, isn't always the case).

I sit with bated breath and in tingling anticipation of the next film, New Moon, again starring Kristen Stewart but this time she will be paired with Taylor Lautner as Jacob Black, an old childhood friend from the local Indian reservation. This next installment will show us the developing relationship between Bella (Stewart) and Jacob Black (Lautner) as Jacob helps Bella to move on after Edward (Pattinson) and the rest if the Cullens leave the town of Forkes, Washington when it becomes clear to Edward that Bella would be much safer if he were not around.

If you are a current fan of the best selling series then I hope you agree with me that this next movie, if done with the same care and consideration given to the first book, is going to be amazing. If you are not yet intrigued by, or are just starting the Twilight series, I hope you continue to be sweetly surprised and abundantly fulfilled by the remaining stories.

The saga continues...

Book Review - My Sisters by Ann Roth

By Maria Lokken Platinum Quality Author

The Lansing Sisters aren't close; they don't even know each other's phone numbers. But, when a car accident kills their mother Susan, they return home to bury her and pack up their past.

Margaret, Rose and Quincy Lansing couldn't be more different, the only thing they have in common is how much they disliked their mother. Carrying the scares from their unhappy childhood they've each become uncommunicative solitary adults. Margaret has retreated into her lab work with no hope of finding a man. Rose is treading on thin ice in her marriage, and Quincy will give her body to any man with a smile. And so begins the journey of three sisters finding themselves amidst a personal tragedy.

Susan Lansing, their mother, was not a kind woman. She had no time for her three daughters, and resented their father for leaving them so many years ago. This is the mother all three sisters remember; too busy and too bitter to be kind or caring. While going through their mother's belongings and receiving condolences from neighbors and friends they come to discover she was quite another person and she wasn't what they always believed her to be. Her marriage to their father isn't what they once thought it was. The very fabric that has created who they are and how they live their lives gets torn down as they dig deeper into their mother's past and as a result their own lives begin to unravel.

This is a story of finding oneself through the loss of a parent and a love for one's sisters that had been forgotten. The author creates every reason for the sisters and the reader to despise Susan. As a reader you're not sure these sisters can ever be close, but as they discover the truth about themselves, they also discover a love for each other.

My Sisters, is a well written novel, with a realistic point of view on relationships and family. I found myself caught up in the story until the end, when everything wrapped up a little too neatly. However, the author's development of each character keeps you reading until the last page.
