I just finished reading the book "Leave Your Nose Ring at Home" by Joe Swinger. I must say that this is one of the best job hunting books I have ever read. As the CEO of a teen jobs site, I read a lot of books related to teen job hunting and this one is right at the top of my best list. The author touches on all of the basics like how to write a resume, job searching tips, and how to interview. What I love about the book is that the information provided is not the same old information you can find anywhere. Mr. Swinger really focuses the reader to think outside of the box and be creative to land the job.
The best part of the book is the chapter that focuses on creating a good favorable impression. The quirky title highlights what I mean about this. This is not a book about grooming practices but the book explains that when you are going out for a job you need to play the part of a job seeker. It is fine if you have a nose ring, but take it out when interviewing. In my experience with teens they feel that they will not be true to their self if they take out their piercings or they have the idea that it does not matter what they look like when applying for a job.
The author really challenges the reader about this early and often. He tells the job seeker to look in the mirror and seriously ask yourself, "Would I hire this person" If the answer is no, then you must make some changes. I recommend this book for all teen job seekers as it will provide the basics you need to know and it is presented in way that will make you look at yourself and take action.
